Some
frequently asked biometric questions:
8. Is Star Food’s finger-scan system safe?
The finger-scan system is
simple, private, highly secure, and will continue to protect the
privacy of students who receive free or reduced price meals.
The original scan is destroyed and no actual
fingerprint image remains. Fingerprints will not be
collected. The sole purpose of a finger-scan is to create a
number that links the student to his or her account. The
scanners are just a way to speed up lunch lines.
Finger-scan programs are now
being used in hundreds of school districts nationwide. Some
school districts are even using finger-scans to dispense
medicine, take attendance, check out books in the library or
ensure that bus-riding students get off at the right stop.
9. Does the Star Food system store an image of
the student’s fingerprint?
No, only an encrypted, digital representation of
the specific points of the fingerprint is stored, not the image,
which is discarded after the feature extraction. The
finger-scan cannot be turned back into a fingerprint.
10. What are the advantages of identification?
The biggest advantage is that the students will
no longer need to carry cash, an identification card or remember
a number that can be forgotten at home, stolen, or lost and
easily used by another student.
11. How often will the scanner be cleaned?
Doesn’t this increase the risk of spreading disease?
The cafeteria staff will keep
wipes at the counter to clean the scanners. The scanner will be
cleaned between each lunch period, which is much even more
sanitary than any door knob, desk, water cooler, restroom
facilities, etc.
In addition, students will be
closely monitored to ensure that they wash their hands before
going through the serving line. Clean hands make clear scans
and faster serving lines.
12. What is the difference between finger-scan
biometrics and automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS)?
Biometric finger-scan systems
are designed to identify persons who want to be identified.
Automated finger print
identification systems (AFIS) is designed to identify persons
who are trying to hide their identity.
13. Will this system create problems for students
with special needs or an injured finger?
Because the system utilizes multiple options,
there are no issues related to students with special needs or
injured fingers.
14. What if the student or student’s
parents/guardians prefer not to use the finger-scan?
The student can still use the
Star Food reimbursable meal vending machine through the cash
option or can be identified by using their ID card or telling
the cashier their name.
